Add Glitter to Pictures

today i went into a thrift store, and saw about six 10and-under yr olds sitting on the floor watching a wall of tvs broadcasting BET’s tribute to Michael Jackson
…………………<3…………………………………
i was definitely in love with Michael Jackson when i was younger…my life was all about MJ and the TMNT. we had a family friend who worked in a record store and he gave me the gigantic promo poster for Dangerous…about a year ago, i realized that cover was painted by Mark Ryden, one of my fave art stars…my original poster was long gone by then but i was able to find one from a printer in Korea…gorgeous
dangerous

…………………<3…………………………………

also had a copy of the movie MoonWalker which i watched to vhs death. heres the beginning of the film, watch the crowd FLIP A SHIT…

the movie also included (among other bizarre and PSYCHO installments) the epic video for Leave me Alone which is arguably inspired by Mark Ryden and WHICH leads into (at 4:27) one of my childhood nightmares = the prequal backstory to Smooth Criminal…

so heres the deal, Jacko and friends (including a young Sean Lennon) are hanging out playin ball in a field, when they accidentally stumble upon Joe Pesci’s secret lair. Pesci is guest starring as a spider fetishing drug dealer angling to sell to children…“Bugs and Drugs. a smooth operation.” FREAK.OUT.
cut to= big city alley way, Jacko is being chased by Pesci’s mobsters and turns himself into a goddam CAR in order to jet out of there…the plot line then dissolves into Smooth Criminal but the nightmare has just begun…

*SPOILER** MJ is a cybernetic transformer FOR REALS…check it out
…………………<3…………………………………
interesting tidbit, Michael and his dancers had to wear these patented “leaning shoes in order to get that famous 45degree angle you can see at 2:07 in the above video…
smoothcriminalshoes

i dont really understand the science…maybe its got something to do with suction?
…………………<3…………………………………
another bizarre film project of MJ’s was Captain EO, a 3D film shown in Disney Theme parks in 86. the film has a seriously impressive roster; it stars Michael Jackson, was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, executive-produced by George Lucas (there are a bunch of Star Wars references), and costars Anjelica Huston. raaaaaandom….
its a kitschy sci-fi adventure story where MJ has the power to morph henchmen into backup dancers….truly…

“a monster’s goddess”

legscutoff
so i recently rediscovered my copy of Herschell Gordon Lewis’s 1963 ultimate blood-lust classic BLOOD FEAST. gimpy and wild eyed Fuad Ramses, a butcher/party caterer,  is asked by a mother to arrange a dinner party for her daughter (Playboy model Connie Mason). Ramses offers to put together an authentic Egyptian feast and goes on a killing spree of helpless young ladies in order to collect their body parts to be used in a sacrifical meal to the Egyptian goddess Ishtar!!!!!!! bloodfeast

Blood Feast is considered to be the first splatter or gore film, which is just what it sounds like: visceral and excessive death scenes that revel in the theatricality of mutilation…for instance, in what is perhaps the most famous scene in the film, a girl gets her tongue ripped out of her face.
openeye

apparantly Blood Feast was also incorrectly cited as the first film to show open-eye deaths…but the picture show man suggests that that honor goes to D. W. Griffith’s The Country Doctor from 1909 and his 1919 film Broken Blossoms that defied the acting convention of peacefully dying with your eyes closed. in both of these examples the deaths were rather gruesome and haunting. in The Country Doctor, Gladys Egan dies of some sickness, and in Broken Blossoms, Lillian Gish is beaten to death by her father. heavyyy

gish

this film has all the endearing B movie aspects, awful acting, terrible dialogue and gruesome homemade fx. the soundtrack even uses fog horn incidentals for prat falls and *end scene*s…but the story is so tight! Lewis doesnt mess around, every scene furthers the plot. he hardly even takes advantage of Connie Mason’s assets, and only indulges in filming one lingering, lounging bikini scene.

BONUS: Miss Mason as Miss June

ConnieMasonMissJune1963

oh you MUST go see this movie. the gore is right on the edge of suspension of disbelief and haunting terror…you know thats just a mannequin leg stuffed with hamburger, and that is hilarious but THAT PSYCHO JUST ATTACKED HER IN THE BATHTUB, AND CHOPPED OFF HER LEG WITH A MACHETE AFTER GOUGING HER EYEBALL OUT. blood bath indeed…
bloodbath

*SPOILER* some of my favorite lines and scenes—
BloodFeast7

(couple makin out on the beach)
Damsel– “shouldnt we be getting back? mama worries about me when it gets dark.”
Tony douchbag– “relax hon, just a while longer, your folks know youre in good hands. ‘sides this is when it just starts getting nice…look, we’ll go home when it gets dark. now, PROVE that you love me”

…………………………………………………………………

BloodFeast13
Fuad Ramsey
– “to make the feast more authentic i must ask the cooperation of the young lady in whose honor the feast is given”
Connie Mason – “Oh how fun! hey! you wouldnt sacrifice me on this altar, would you?”

sorayama_gynoid
saw a copy of Hajimi Sorayama’sHyper Illustrations” at my local used book retailer, Chop Suey
i fell in looooove but lately i cant afford much monetarily or space wise…
but fuckit, it could be an early bday present…Sorayama is a Japanese illustrator whose freelance work gained recognition in the late 70’s and early 80’s. his work references classic pin up girl poses, like those of Vargas (whom everyone copies)…

VARGAS

Sorayama’s portfolio includes many fetishist ladies and your typical pin up girls, but his most original and bizarre works are of futuristic gynoids. the term comes from British Sci Fi writer Gwyneth Jones and is a combination of “droid” (which is Greek for “in the image of”) and “gyn” (which is Greek for “woman”). this term has been used in feminist discourses (see Donna Haraway’s
Cyborg Manifesto) as gynoids represent physical strength in females and reproductive freedom…and besides they look awesome on rock albums…

Sorayama’s also well known for having designed the 1st generation AIBO robotic dog…
aibo

and then this Autobianchi commercial from 1985 totally jumps on the sexy robot band-wagon, except she looks kinda gimpy…kinda duck-faced…

Baltimore friends AK Slaughter have an interview on BeatBots!!!!!!!!!!!

Emily sez:…

it’s not that I don’t like rap, I like it a lot, but if I could sing I would probably sing country music instead of rap…It’s like I’ll write the songs thinking that I could make them country songs, but they turn out to be rap songs and I really like the way they turn out. They’re very similar, the two genres, I think. They talk about the same things but in different ways. Like “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk“… think about it.

and then! Repelican and the Art Department were written up too! both are music projects of Baltimore friend Jon Ehrens (with Mike Meno and Jason Howe) and both are fun fun party/hop up and down music. definitely check out that myspace linkage.

anyway, brightest young things discusses some of the secret meanings behind Art Dept songs…
and mobtown studios sings praises to Repelican’s album Don’t Mumble the Manifesto
also here is a more extensive write up from citypaper that discusses the origins of Art Dept

A few years ago, recordings surfaced on the internet of a lost album by the Art Department, a mid-’80s indie band from Carson City, Nevada…Eventually, Maryland native Jon Ehrens fessed up the truth about the Art Department: The mysterious Carson City quartet never existed. He’d recorded the 13-song album, The Art Anthology, one weekend in 2005, after dreaming up the imaginary band based on a peculiar singing style and the way his guitar sounded with a capo. He even laid down each instrumental track like a method actor, getting into the character of each imaginary musician’s particular tics and playing styles. “My new thing was, I’m gonna invent a band, invent a bio, record an album for them, and just forget about it,” Ehrens explains. “That was my plan for Art Department”…
