not so much to be loved as to love…

Jill Kossoris “does Blondie” better than anyone else…
apprantly Jill lives in Nashville now….hm

also, jill is totally hair inspiration for those of us fine and pin straight-haired….some of the members of the Shivvers were also in a band called In a Hot Coma, i cant find anything about them on the internet except for this snippet of a song on allmusic…i wanna stay up all night…click the lil speaker once you get there…
……………………………………………………………………………………….

man, so ben and elle have been off vacay-ing in mexico for a week now, they come back tomorrow and meanwhile! so much has happened to Rufus and I while holding down the fort (rufus is the d-o-g)…

went out to girls night! had tapas and got SICK FOOD POISONING SICK…but not immediately, first we went to see Natural Child

then i was sick forever, found a mouse in the house, made 60 bucks, spent it at the thrift store, and then i broke my glasses! end of an under-documented era…this is the only (unflattering) picture i think of me in said glasses…incidentally, this was also taken the day after my bday and double incidentally im in love with summer and i cannot wait for us to see each other again…

anyway, after a mild pout and identity crisis, i found these Bettys on etsy and said “ooooooooh!!” so i knew i needed them. im excited to begin new identity: horn-rimmed prom date/nerd-corp nurse type in regulation pink aluminum…

………………………………………………………………………………………………………

and THEN i went to see Jonathan Richman at the 5spot. ugh, i DIE. what a SWOON FEST, me and my girlfriends could hardly keep upright the whole time, so weak in the knees for him!
i had seen him before about two years ago, same place, and i had forgotten what an intense performer he is! he gets this puppy dog stare while he plays, hes so sincere, id vote for him. there it is…

and he just has complete mastery of his instrument and his voice and you can tell he’s been on stage forever and adores it. and hes so funny and deep and talented and WE GOT OUR PICTURE WITH HIM and im such a blushing fan-girl, all i could do was giggle and gasp at him. siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh

via jojo blog…heres his song “older girl”…..
she smiled, and that got me thinking about her….

not so much to be loved as to love…st francis of assisi via jonathan richman.
the show last night, there were maybe 100 people there. very intimate, and everyone was completely silent…
lovely lovely lovely
one more…

ready for some sun…

today…
in between LOST commercials, i made these chocolate puddle cookies from a recipe my mom sent me. they are rather divine, they smell like brownies while theyre baking and are sort of crispy like meringue and then sort of fudgy on the inside. good good.
……………………………………

for christmas, alex got me a fringe necklace made by her friend Annie. mine has a brown crocheted neck-line and then this painted leather fringe that sorta looks like peacock feathers. anyway, alex sent me Annie’s etsy which has all kinds of other lovely things for sale. im rather partial to these “crystal” earrings…painted upcycled leather…

and then tonight, eatin cookies and watching tv, we stumbled upon an excerpt from Operavox:

An ambitious experiment by the BBC that ultimately fails, Operavox attempts to condense six famous operas into animated half-hours. The limited time forces the filmmakers to present the stories in clunky English translations, while reducing the celebrated scores to musical mincemeat.
The stop-motion animators come the closest to succeeding. Barry J.C. Purves captures the malevolent pleasures and crushing sorrows of the court of Mantua in his atmospheric rendition of Verdi’s Rigoletto. Natalia Dabizha’s softer, more traditional puppets give Rossini’s The Barber of Seville the feeling of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, but she manages to preserve a suitably comic tone. Valeri Oganov treats Mozart’s sublime Magic Flute as if it were an episode from Yellow Submarine, while Graham Ralph tries to turn Wagner’s Das Rheingold into Heavy Metal, with Freya in a Frazetta-esque bikini. via amazon

we saw some of The Magic Flute, and since this is the future, i was able to find the piece in its entirety on YouTube.
so WATCH IT. the animation is trippy, VERY yellow submarine, and the story is so fantastical, get some culture, itll make for good dreams.
and one day youll hear it on the radio and impress someone by saying, “oh, thats Mozart’s The Magic Flute”.
and theyll be smitten and run off with you to Africa, to follow the sun.

while i was working on some stuff for Local Honeyyyy, I watched Total Eclipse starring Leonardo Dicaprio as the poet Rimbaud…it was a pretty goofy undertaking. the story awkwardly jump-cut through time and was mostly concerned with Rimbaud’s homosexual relationship with the poet Verlaine. dramatized biographies bother me. while i LOVED Dicaprio in the role, as a rakish rapscallion genius, i wanted it to be directed by PBS or something…to at least appear accredited.

every day is a ho-liday…

i am worrying about memory. i kind of always have actually…sometimes, i wonder if its because im an only child. i imagine that if i were to have a sibling, they would help me keep all these pieces of childhood together. but maybe thats wrong.
ive been trying to keep myself accountable. i tried logging how many hours i spent on the internet, but then i was just wasting extra time, writing down how much time i was wasting.
i’m not trying to document and categorize my trash and refuse, but i’m interested to see what i actually do with my self, with my time and my life…
so heres a memory experiment, a TMI experiment…
today…
i woke up because my mom called me. she’s going to send me some more sweaters from home because when i packed to move to nashville, i was under the impression that winter was over. it was snowing outside this morning, i moved my car while still in my pajamas cause last time it snowed, i had to call the triple a guys to come pull my car out of the drive way.

i did sun salutations, had breakfast and looked for jobs on the internet, nothing interesting or worthwhile. hung out till lunch with the Cosby show. Elle likes watching day time television, the Cosby show and the Tyra Banks talk show in particular. i cut my bangs.
i felt restless, and upset about the snow and the cold and the lame job postings. i decided to go to the grocery store in order to buy the ingredients needed to make carrot ginger breakfast loaf, good with cream cheese.

i called jamie while i was there (because i saw some sexy pictures on her tumblr) and heard all about her residency at the Lobot gallery in Oakland california, how she moved back to Richmond for a week, how people acted like she had never left and yet were not sad to see her move on again to Brooklyn. she had recently gone to her great aunt’s 100th birthday party…it was uncomfortable and awkward and the aunt didnt seem cognisant.

i made the carrot bread, i added extra pulped ginger. elle made ben a heart shaped pizza for an after valentines date and i made myself scarce for a while, hanging out in my room watching the new project runway. the judges keep liking things that i hate and ignoring things that id actually like to wear. it makes me wonder about my taste level.
timothy called, i made him promise to send me a late vday present. i want to start pen pal correspondances because its always nice to get things in the mail…i also want to paint my room, so that i can put nails in the wall and hang up things i want to look at. i like zephyr

ben went to the bar, elle and i had whiskey and carrot bread, watched models on the runway and did our nails cause we are ladies. we did not go to the paper hats show at bettys, nor to the dance party at the five spot…another time.

now i am upstairs, watching art 21 season 3 “memory” with hiroshi sugimoto etc and i am remembering how…..
in college, we were taken on a field trip to dc where we visited a sugimoto exhibit, “seascapes”.
these dozen or so photographs were heavily lit on a wall in an other wise blacked out room, my best friend alex and i decided that this was the way to go…in a dark room of sugimoto’s, music blasting and poisonous gas seeping in… dance party till you drop.
bleak…

fan base

oh my how flattering! the prolific miss shea steele gave me a little shout out on her store blog.
shea owns local honey, a cute nashville boutique thats got the hippest threadz…thrifted and locally designed gems and yes, soon therell be something there from me! surprises!
but i need to think of a label name and image for hang tags…shall i just be “dixie rose“? i was granted a lovely name and i since im not really banking on the stripper career…
i dunno i dunno! a lot to think about.
………………………………………..

i still dont have a job yet but during the valentine weekend i helped out at Edible Arrangements :-p
it was actually a lot of fun, i think food prep and chocolatiering are something im interested in persuing…in some way somehow…
anyway i was working sweat shop hours, 6am to 5pm or 9pm, just to help them catch up on this valentines rush. so for a couple days, my life was not my own and my sleep schedule was erratic and my head was nowheresville MAN!
so i need to get back in the game, need to get back into making!

…………………………
…………………..……………………………..

speaking of making, back in richmond i made these little pom pom dealie boppers for my shoes after seeing them on yokoo’s flikr. that would be yokoo of etsy millionaire fame. like my bathroom photo shoot? heh…
anyway, i only got to wear them once and then it started SNOWING and then it FOLLOWED me to nashville…

and THEN how bizarre, i saw this picture by frederic gable…and i saw it AFTER i did my own little pom pom shoot in the tub…some collective conscious stuff i guess…

also can we just reminisce on this?
hot rodding teenagers from dimension x…the fourth episode from the first season 1987…best episode of teenage mutant ninja turtles ever. the neutrinos are so cool!! alternate dimension teenagers are apparently way into hot doggin and american 50’s culture. so radical….

good enough for me…

so! ive moved back to nashville! my dear friends ben and elle are letting me live up in their attic, a 2nd floor club house like i like. and im the perfect tennant for it cause i think im the only one who fits in it, i can stand on my tiptoes and my head touches the ceiling. a tree tops dollhouse for dixie!
and and and, before i got here, my second hand futon bed served as a crash pad for beat happening’s calvin johnson. NBD. but it prompted me to make this…

excuse the rough photo booth quality but i just wanted to shoot a quick progress shot. pretty silly but ive never cross stitched before and i just wanted to get on and try it. i want to add some music notes but i cant decide if i want to embroider them on or what…
……………………………….

so much has already happened! elle was asked to be in stone jack jones’ new music video for the song “the state im in“. lots of tromping in the woods, swinging on branches and dreamy filtered sunlight…check out more pics here. the new video is by zack spiger, heres one of his past projects with jack…

last weekend i went to amateur wrestling at the stadium inn boasting the world’s scariest bathroom. i tried to take pics but even my camera’s “sports” setting couldnt keep them from being blurry. so heres a whole album of blurry photos! it was some real world entertainment to be sure, heres some fight footage and a look at the audience…

………………………………..

and then it was elle’s birthday and we made bday cupcake cones! and then i made a quiche! and a seven layer super bowl dip with cheese crisp fleur de lis!!! yaaay saints.
a lotta things!
good times in nashville, but it keeps snowing and turning immediately to mush, gross out.
