how am i not myself…?

i miss fireflies, i miss the rain…ill trade it all in for a plague of cicadas and floods in memphis (even though, not brought on by rains and perhaps that was tasteless…)
california’s not for me.
i mean, its 70 degrees and sunny all the time. i dont think im even allowed to self-identify as a blonde without “feeling home” in california…
but, i miss everybody, and i guess im just a southern girl at heart…
so! im transferring to memphis university!
……………………………………………………….
but first, my mom’s getting married!!
wedding party!!
my dear bestie turned model elle will be my date and we will be in attendance at Tio’s Tacos art garden!!
soon to be featured on Mtv cribs, HA…i didnt even know Mtv was still around…
anyhoo, wanna see what im wearing?

elie tahari dress. gold and sequins and snakeskin details
1996 flash-back with some coral steve madden sandals
mac lipstick in morange, new fave summer lip color, so ORANGE
agate slice and gold foil earrings from anthropologie pretty pretty
trying to do something simple and slick with my hair, gonna channel chloe sevigny pool-side with some push-back bangs.

i think all together it brings about an alexander mcqueen vibe.
DRESS UP!
………………………………………………………….

after the wedding, my dad is coming and driving with me cross country to nashville.
we’re gonna take a week or so hanging out in the desert, drinking date shakes, visiting canyons and parks and stuff.
ADVENTURE!
…………………………………………………………
it hasn’t all been misery out here.
since coming to california, i’ve collected 16 varieties of succulents and 3 cactus cuttings, including a cactus cutting stolen from joshua tree national park
i hope they acclimate well to tenn….
i never knew there were so many different shapes and colors of these. and some of them flower! and they just grow naturally around here, because california is certainly beautiful…

………………………………………………………
and i finished a semester here at Cal State Fullerton! six transferrable credits, yayyy!
i saw this inspiring interview with the etsy success story dreamboat yokoo

“i just feel like theres no room to be mediocre, and its not because i have some kind of disorder its simply because i enjoy immensely being great

“i love being hardcore”

i try to keep things like that in mind. im kind of a lazy person, sometimes i forget that i want to be great.

not so much to be loved as to love…

Jill Kossoris “does Blondie” better than anyone else…
apprantly Jill lives in Nashville now….hm

also, jill is totally hair inspiration for those of us fine and pin straight-haired….some of the members of the Shivvers were also in a band called In a Hot Coma, i cant find anything about them on the internet except for this snippet of a song on allmusic…i wanna stay up all night…click the lil speaker once you get there…
……………………………………………………………………………………….

man, so ben and elle have been off vacay-ing in mexico for a week now, they come back tomorrow and meanwhile! so much has happened to Rufus and I while holding down the fort (rufus is the d-o-g)…

went out to girls night! had tapas and got SICK FOOD POISONING SICK…but not immediately, first we went to see Natural Child

then i was sick forever, found a mouse in the house, made 60 bucks, spent it at the thrift store, and then i broke my glasses! end of an under-documented era…this is the only (unflattering) picture i think of me in said glasses…incidentally, this was also taken the day after my bday and double incidentally im in love with summer and i cannot wait for us to see each other again…

anyway, after a mild pout and identity crisis, i found these Bettys on etsy and said “ooooooooh!!” so i knew i needed them. im excited to begin new identity: horn-rimmed prom date/nerd-corp nurse type in regulation pink aluminum…

………………………………………………………………………………………………………

and THEN i went to see Jonathan Richman at the 5spot. ugh, i DIE. what a SWOON FEST, me and my girlfriends could hardly keep upright the whole time, so weak in the knees for him!
i had seen him before about two years ago, same place, and i had forgotten what an intense performer he is! he gets this puppy dog stare while he plays, hes so sincere, id vote for him. there it is…

and he just has complete mastery of his instrument and his voice and you can tell he’s been on stage forever and adores it. and hes so funny and deep and talented and WE GOT OUR PICTURE WITH HIM and im such a blushing fan-girl, all i could do was giggle and gasp at him. siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh

via jojo blog…heres his song “older girl”…..
she smiled, and that got me thinking about her….

not so much to be loved as to love…st francis of assisi via jonathan richman.
the show last night, there were maybe 100 people there. very intimate, and everyone was completely silent…
lovely lovely lovely
one more…

ready for some sun…

today…
in between LOST commercials, i made these chocolate puddle cookies from a recipe my mom sent me. they are rather divine, they smell like brownies while theyre baking and are sort of crispy like meringue and then sort of fudgy on the inside. good good.
……………………………………

for christmas, alex got me a fringe necklace made by her friend Annie. mine has a brown crocheted neck-line and then this painted leather fringe that sorta looks like peacock feathers. anyway, alex sent me Annie’s etsy which has all kinds of other lovely things for sale. im rather partial to these “crystal” earrings…painted upcycled leather…

and then tonight, eatin cookies and watching tv, we stumbled upon an excerpt from Operavox:

An ambitious experiment by the BBC that ultimately fails, Operavox attempts to condense six famous operas into animated half-hours. The limited time forces the filmmakers to present the stories in clunky English translations, while reducing the celebrated scores to musical mincemeat.
The stop-motion animators come the closest to succeeding. Barry J.C. Purves captures the malevolent pleasures and crushing sorrows of the court of Mantua in his atmospheric rendition of Verdi’s Rigoletto. Natalia Dabizha’s softer, more traditional puppets give Rossini’s The Barber of Seville the feeling of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, but she manages to preserve a suitably comic tone. Valeri Oganov treats Mozart’s sublime Magic Flute as if it were an episode from Yellow Submarine, while Graham Ralph tries to turn Wagner’s Das Rheingold into Heavy Metal, with Freya in a Frazetta-esque bikini. via amazon

we saw some of The Magic Flute, and since this is the future, i was able to find the piece in its entirety on YouTube.
so WATCH IT. the animation is trippy, VERY yellow submarine, and the story is so fantastical, get some culture, itll make for good dreams.
and one day youll hear it on the radio and impress someone by saying, “oh, thats Mozart’s The Magic Flute”.
and theyll be smitten and run off with you to Africa, to follow the sun.

while i was working on some stuff for Local Honeyyyy, I watched Total Eclipse starring Leonardo Dicaprio as the poet Rimbaud…it was a pretty goofy undertaking. the story awkwardly jump-cut through time and was mostly concerned with Rimbaud’s homosexual relationship with the poet Verlaine. dramatized biographies bother me. while i LOVED Dicaprio in the role, as a rakish rapscallion genius, i wanted it to be directed by PBS or something…to at least appear accredited.
