summer reading list

i think i want to cut my bangs again
i’ve kinda lost sight of who i want to be///what i want to look like

talking heads:::seen and not seen<—click
He would see faces in movies, on T.V., in magazines, and in books….
He thought that some of these faces might be right for him….And
through the years, by keeing an ideal facial structure fixed in his
mind….Or somewhere in the back of his mind….That he might, by
force of will, cause his face to approach those of his ideal….The
change would be very subtle….It might take ten years or so….
Gradually his face would change its’ shape….A more hooked nose…
Wider, thinner lips….Beady eyes….A larger forehead.

He imagined that this was an ability he shared with most other
people….They had also molded their faced according to some
ideal….Maybe they imagined that their new face would better
suit their personality….Or maybe they imagined that their
personality would be forced to change to fit the new appear-
ance….This is why first impressions are often correct…
Although some people might have made mistakes….They may have
arrived at an appearance that bears no relationship to them….
They may have picked an ideal appearance based on some childish
whim, or momentary impulse….Some may have gotten half-way
there, and then changed their minds.
He wonders if he too might have made a similar mistake.

i wonder if i too might have made a similar mistake…..

so yeah reading! first up, i have Peggy Orenstein’s “Cinderella Ate my Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the new Girlie-Girl Culture.”
its got glitter on the cover!
the title pretty much sums up the content of the book.
Orenstein writes that even though educational and professional opportunities are on the rise for today’s girls, American media oriented towards girls still encourages them to “equate identity with image, self-expression with appearance, femininity with performance, pleasure with pleasing, and sexuality with sexualization.”
i’m certainly one to equate identity with image, as demonstrated in the beginning of this very post! :-p
i think that self-expression and appearance and creativity and identity are all linked….but when a girl is taught that their appearance is the only way they can express themselves, thats not ok…

the book is not pure pink bashing though. Orenstein began all this research with the question, is this princess mania a true threat? a “more sinister marketing plot with long-term negative impacts”? or is it just a harmless phase?
the book is heavily research-based and full of information but is written with humor and reads more like an opinion piece than a scholarly article
yayyyyy
all quotes from the always reputable amazon.com

if that starts feeling a little too educational, i’ve got Thomas Pynchon’s “The Crying of Lot 49” from dear bestie Alex Ebstein of Baltimore’s Nudashank Gallery.
its Pynchon’s shortest novel but the language is still as dense and verbose as “V”.
but its still sexy, poetic non-fiction.
a beach-read
i like Pynchon. to me he reads like the funny, surreal side of Vonnegut + Henry Miller‘s sexy adventuring inner monologue writing style.

and theeeen, i want to order Jon Ronson’s “The Psychopath Test”
first off, awesome cover…and then ive always been interested in psycho killersss
in this book, Ronson learns how to administer Robert Hare’s psychopath test and then goes on to interview prisoners, psychologists and criminally insane people.
here, ill let him explain it, hes got the cutest voice :-p

sweet 16 pre-game

so, im certainly not the most prolific of bloggers….
anyway, this is gonna be a pretty self-indulgent post…
new frames! and new haircut!

re-frames: i think i look like a smart cookie.
they remind me of
fran gerard
heavy-handed and obvious…i like how they
spite my face…
PS: SERIOUS TITTIES OMGEEE

……………………………………….
re-haircut: im thinkin post-fashion, 90’s bob ala My So Called Life
i dont know why i waited so long. i feel like myself again…after a long time of not looking like myself without realizing it….or something
i finally made the cut after
elle did it first…..
and then after seeing Roman Polanski’s
Repulsion and realizing that I had the same haircut as Catherine Deneuve, Polanski’s “anesthetized…inarticulate, and possibly even murderous somnambulate”…this is not the look i was going for…
but Repulsion is awesome! i watched it without knowing anything about it, so it was truly horrific and creeeeeepy. especially cause i was home
alone!
im including the trailer, but DONT WATCH IT! its full of spoilers…like, serious plot twists you dont see coming…
Repulsion, a story of one woman’s
sexual paranoia and spiraling psychosis, is the first film in Polanski’s so-called “Apartment Trilogy”, a collection of films about urban fear. Rosemary’s Baby and The Tenet are the other two, havent seen The Tenet yet…
psycho-thriller, qu’est-ce que c’est?

and we saw our dear friends the Tyler Family Band play at Bettys!
featuring
Elise Tyler of Halcyon and getting married soon fame
William Tyler of Silver Jews and previous post fame
and Dan and Adelle!

adorable! love it!

and it was my birthday!!
and i made a gorgeous delicious cake! strawberries soaked in
galliano with french vanilla cake and greek yogurt/heavy cream frosting
yummmmmm, i swear
bday festivities included: ladies dinner at The Smiling Elephant
which was AMAZING! i never knew that pad thai didnt have to be a greasy, heavy mess. everything was light and delicious and lovely and i highly recommend it.
and then karaoke at Ms Kelli’s downtown. its a night i nearly remember….
more pics on the flik lik likr
…………………………

bonus summer fun!: pics from Loney’s bday river outingcheckit!

RIP: black, Made in Tokyo thrift store frames…..3rd pair of sunglasses lost to a summer river trip
i barely knew thee….

is anything important, no, i dont know…

ive got a serious obsession with Ariel Pink going on…i literally cant stop listening to this song. it has surpassed Kate Bush’s “Hounds of Love” in my itunes play count….
but yeah, his new album “Before Today” is floating around out there on the internet. id say a bit more solid and produced than his other albums, and totally has a Hall and Oates vibe.
but this obsession…has something to do with that hair of his. if i were a boy, i would have the longest california summer z-boy hair imaginable. some Bowie/androgyny dichotomy left over from highschool makes me want pixie cuts on ladies and devil-may-care length on fellas. an idea discussed further in a previous post of mine….
which i just realized!!! is from a year ago…i missed my anniversary! my first post was march 09!

…………………………………………………………

another anniversary this year is that of “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure”, which is 25 years old this August. as old as me.
i have always loved him.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

more about “Queen of The Sun Teaser Clip“, posted with vodpod

so, elle was working at the nashville film fest this past month and i got to see “Queen of the Sun” with her. it was poetic and beautiful, shot in france and new zealand and…portland…
the story is “a piercing examination of the global bee crisis seen through the eyes of beekeepers, scientists, farmers, and philosophers”. while the film talked about the problems and solutions with “renewing a culture in balance with nature”, it didnt cast any entity as a villain necessarily. the film discussed our whole culture’s
remiss behavior towards bees. we have a responsibility to create a safe habitat for bees and our development, pesticides and mono-agriculture have made it nearly impossible for them to be a successful species.
anyway, its a very interesting topic and a serious problem. elle and i have been dreaming of a hive in the back yard…

irving penn

………………………………………………..

and i also saw this! Nishimura’s vampire girl vs frankenstein girl! wild wild wild! a couple people left the theatre during the obscenely bloody opening scene. think, japanese director referencing quentin tarrantino as he references a different japanese director…gore upon gore.
………………………………………………..

and also i made a pie! and i took a terrible picture of it!
strawberry rhubarb in honor of the coming summer…
although with all the cinnamon, i always think straw/barb pie tastes like christmas

twist

blog post number 94: in which i mostly obsess about my hair.
but first things first…i got some new dance moves for the summah………

……………………………………………

ugh, brigitte bardot…you are why my hair is long…(also look at that coloring, shes all pink, gold and black)….
sadly, once it got to length, my hair could not be made into sexy bedtime ringlets like hers without a lot of persuasion…i get more of the pin straight jane birkin/heavy bangs look….which is not bad…

i dunno, i think i wanna cut it all off. perhaps just to spite all the time i put into it….and also its only april, but the sweat is already killing me….length = heat!…
…………………………………….

anyway, the other night we watched Class of 1984, which ben remembered watching on ABC as the daytime movie special when he was a kid….its this over the top horror film about punk gangs in high school. its trying REALLY hard to be Clockwork Orange (theres a scene where the main punk is whistling a cheery tune as he rapes this woman)…its ridiculous, and takes a bizarre revenge twist. i love when hollywood takes a crack at the teen scene.
and then Canadian band Teenage Head make a guest appearance as the punk pied pipers of teen violence…

and BABY micheal j. fox is in it…
and that would be the token punk chick, Patsy, licking his face. she had my eye the entire film…shes a summer influence…

yes, thats a shoelace tied underneath her bangs, marilyn monroe tank, short shorts, geometric leather, driving gloves and coca cola….and here: an
outrageous cave-lady/ruffled lizard leather outfit complete with cicciolina eyebrows….
and check the bangs….super tuff…i might have to go for the pink wash dye job…

and so, rather than cutting off all my hair, im settling for 1984 bangs/j.lo punk…note the unicorn glitter tattoo…SASSITUDE….

obsess…obsess…obsess…obsess…obsess…obsess…obsess…obsess…
here are some bonus pics of previously mentioned Cicciolina ( Miss. ilona Staller, Italian politician, porn star and former wife of jeff koons)
via wiki:

“While in office, before the outset of the Gulf War she offered to have sex with Saddam Hussein if he would release his foreign hostages…in April 2006 she made the same offer to Osama bin Laden.”
bad ass bitch….

not so much to be loved as to love…

Jill Kossoris “does Blondie” better than anyone else…
apprantly Jill lives in Nashville now….hm

also, jill is totally hair inspiration for those of us fine and pin straight-haired….some of the members of the Shivvers were also in a band called In a Hot Coma, i cant find anything about them on the internet except for this snippet of a song on allmusic…i wanna stay up all night…click the lil speaker once you get there…
……………………………………………………………………………………….

man, so ben and elle have been off vacay-ing in mexico for a week now, they come back tomorrow and meanwhile! so much has happened to Rufus and I while holding down the fort (rufus is the d-o-g)…

went out to girls night! had tapas and got SICK FOOD POISONING SICK…but not immediately, first we went to see Natural Child

then i was sick forever, found a mouse in the house, made 60 bucks, spent it at the thrift store, and then i broke my glasses! end of an under-documented era…this is the only (unflattering) picture i think of me in said glasses…incidentally, this was also taken the day after my bday and double incidentally im in love with summer and i cannot wait for us to see each other again…

anyway, after a mild pout and identity crisis, i found these Bettys on etsy and said “ooooooooh!!” so i knew i needed them. im excited to begin new identity: horn-rimmed prom date/nerd-corp nurse type in regulation pink aluminum…

………………………………………………………………………………………………………

and THEN i went to see Jonathan Richman at the 5spot. ugh, i DIE. what a SWOON FEST, me and my girlfriends could hardly keep upright the whole time, so weak in the knees for him!
i had seen him before about two years ago, same place, and i had forgotten what an intense performer he is! he gets this puppy dog stare while he plays, hes so sincere, id vote for him. there it is…

and he just has complete mastery of his instrument and his voice and you can tell he’s been on stage forever and adores it. and hes so funny and deep and talented and WE GOT OUR PICTURE WITH HIM and im such a blushing fan-girl, all i could do was giggle and gasp at him. siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh

via jojo blog…heres his song “older girl”…..
she smiled, and that got me thinking about her….

not so much to be loved as to love…st francis of assisi via jonathan richman.
the show last night, there were maybe 100 people there. very intimate, and everyone was completely silent…
lovely lovely lovely
one more…

do one thing every day that scares you…

maroon
first some non sequiturs….
do you find yourself attracted to a certain color in all forms for a time?

do you find yourself taking advice from pop songs?
like baz luhrmann’s sunscreen song…
recently heard for the first time in 10 years at a spin the bottle party…

yvette vickers 59

i found this archive of every playboy centerfold ever…
this one
and i had found another but i think maybe it got taken down…i dunno.
i think the photo above is my favorite, thats yvette vickers, miss july 1959. its such a good scene, she looks totally hung over but getting the party started again. love it.
but if i were to consider form and style and artistic merit of a photo, this one of anne fleming, miss september 1955, is pretty sophisticated… anne fleming 955_september
around the 60s, the girls get more naked, the scenes are have a little more depth to them, the outfits are definitely more interesting…gwen wong, miss april 1967
gwen wong1967_april

then in the 70’s, girls start doing normal things naked. like…out in public.
patricia mcclain, miss may 1976
patricia mcclain 76

and then in the 80’s, girls get a little fantastical.
marlene janssen, miss november 1982
marlene janssen1982_november

and then the 90’s and 00’s are trashy, gross skanky trash.
no need.
except for the 2002 one with dita von teese. DUH

so i didnt make it to the opening, but Nudashank‘s latest show, Chromotose, juried by Erik Parker, looks pretty amazing. check out photos from the opening reception on Nuda’s website.
i love the rainbow fade signage (see above next to a painting by John Bohl).
and see below, this creepy bat(?) face by Bill Dunlap.
perhaps my favorite so far, having not gotten a close look at everything yet.
