i think i want to cut my bangs again
i’ve kinda lost sight of who i want to be///what i want to look like

talking heads:::seen and not seen<—click
He would see faces in movies, on T.V., in magazines, and in books….
He thought that some of these faces might be right for him….And
through the years, by keeing an ideal facial structure fixed in his
mind….Or somewhere in the back of his mind….That he might, by
force of will, cause his face to approach those of his ideal….The
change would be very subtle….It might take ten years or so….
Gradually his face would change its’ shape….A more hooked nose…
Wider, thinner lips….Beady eyes….A larger forehead.

He imagined that this was an ability he shared with most other
people….They had also molded their faced according to some
ideal….Maybe they imagined that their new face would better
suit their personality….Or maybe they imagined that their
personality would be forced to change to fit the new appear-
ance….This is why first impressions are often correct…
Although some people might have made mistakes….They may have
arrived at an appearance that bears no relationship to them….
They may have picked an ideal appearance based on some childish
whim, or momentary impulse….Some may have gotten half-way
there, and then changed their minds.
He wonders if he too might have made a similar mistake.

i wonder if i too might have made a similar mistake…..

so yeah reading! first up, i have Peggy Orenstein’s “Cinderella Ate my Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the new Girlie-Girl Culture.”
its got glitter on the cover!
the title pretty much sums up the content of the book.
Orenstein writes that even though educational and professional opportunities are on the rise for today’s girls, American media oriented towards girls still encourages them to “equate identity with image, self-expression with appearance, femininity with performance, pleasure with pleasing, and sexuality with sexualization.”
i’m certainly one to equate identity with image, as demonstrated in the beginning of this very post! :-p
i think that self-expression and appearance and creativity and identity are all linked….but when a girl is taught that their appearance is the only way they can express themselves, thats not ok…

the book is not pure pink bashing though. Orenstein began all this research with the question, is this princess mania a true threat? a “more sinister marketing plot with long-term negative impacts”? or is it just a harmless phase?
the book is heavily research-based and full of information but is written with humor and reads more like an opinion piece than a scholarly article
yayyyyy

if that starts feeling a little too educational, i’ve got Thomas Pynchon’s “The Crying of Lot 49” from dear bestie Alex Ebstein of Baltimore’s Nudashank Gallery.
its Pynchon’s shortest novel but the language is still as dense and verbose as “V”.
but its still sexy, poetic non-fiction.
a beach-read
i like Pynchon. to me he reads like the funny, surreal side of Vonnegut + Henry Miller‘s sexy adventuring inner monologue writing style.

and theeeen, i want to order Jon Ronson’s “The Psychopath Test”
first off, awesome cover…and then ive always been interested in psycho killersss
in this book, Ronson learns how to administer Robert Hare’s psychopath test and then goes on to interview prisoners, psychologists and criminally insane people.
here, ill let him explain it, hes got the cutest voice :-p

domestic goddess…

so ive quit my job, and im moving to california!!
no joke. gonna live like jayne mansfield in a plush pink bathroom…
im going to start attending cal state fullerton in order to study cultural anthropology.
yes!
but in the mean time, my mind is free to wander and consider delicious things….and then have the time to actually MAKE those things!!
so heres a quick list of tasty things ive made recently…
also note that i didnt actually take pictures of anything. whoops…

for thanksgiving, i made this ginger-honey pumpkin pie from epicurious. i also made the candied pecans from this recipe to put on top. however i made them into CURRIED candied pecans, delicious.
notes: somehow, the pie itself was a bit wet….i dont know how to fix that. i also put WAY more fresh ginger than called for and it was delicous!
the curried candied pecans…i made them, and just poured the whole sugar mess out of the pan and onto the pie, so that it formed a big praline on top…if i were to do it again, id seperate out the nuts on parchment paper per the recipe suggestion.
comments: “how could i ever eat normal pumpkin pie again?!”- jessica

for the hell of it, i made these: mrs. beans famous nutmeg ginger apple snaps from fantastic mr. fox
……they were alright.
a) i think it turns out i dont like nutmeg.
b) they were kinda too cakey, but good with ice cream.
the next day they were better, snappier and crispier. but then the next day, the apples were sorta rubbery and blugh.
also, i burnt out the hand mixer trying to beat this dough together. whoops.
but my sweet tooth boyfriend thought they were awesome.
……………………………………………………….

then i stumbled upon this west african peanut butter soup recipe .
i stayed completely faithful to the recipe and there was wayyyy too much peanut butter…
we also used quinoa instead of rice because quinoa is a complete complex protein! BALLIN
verdict: too much peanut butter not enough tomato.
we remedied this at dinner by serving it with lime which added kind of an exotic flair.
leftover idea!: made buckwheat soba noodles and then just used the soup as a sauce. YUM!

nashville has been recieving a heavy dose of wintry mix lately, so i made a big pot of my mom’s veggie chili. she had made it up herself so she had a little trouble writing out a recipe for me, but here tis:

veggie chili for 5:

just use whole vegetables and double everything if there are more people

1/2 eggplant or a small one
1/2 onion
lots of garlic – 4-5 cloves
2 fat carrots
1 small zuke
1 small yellow squash
package of mushrooms
green bell pepper
1 big yellow waxy potato
1 big sweet potato
12 oz (ish) can of red kidney beans
12 oz (ish) can of black beans
12 oz (ish) can of garbanzo beans
a big can (16? 20? oz) about 4″ across – peeled whole tomatoes
Contadina makes the best tomato products
12 oz can of tomato sauce – not paste. Contadina makes the best tomato products
smallish (8 OZ?) can of corn
2 pkgs of French’s Chili-O (buy it! It’s yum)
some cinnamon, salt ground pepper
EVOO

ok – peel and cube the potato and sweet potato and cook in some boiling salted water
about 15 min. to start to soften. Drain and set aside.
so chop up the garlic, onion and peel the eggplant and cube it, chop
all the veggies into delectable bite sized pieces.
saute-the eggplant in a LOT of olive oil as it soaks it all up. You’ve got to brown it. Set aside out of the pan.
More olive oil, saute the garlic and onion. Set aside w/the eggplant.
More olive oil, saute the carrots, green pepper, zuke and squash just to brown them. Don’t let them get mushy. Set aside w/the other stuff.
More olive oil, saute the shrooms. Set aside w/the other stuff.
Get a BIG POT and dump in the beans and corn with their juice, the tomatoes and sauce.
Put a little bit of water in the frying pan and deglaze all the good veggie juices and dump that in too.
Dump all the veggies in and the Chili-o. You might need to add a little water. Or beer. Or wine. Or V-8. Or whatever.
If you have some leftovers that seem appropriate add them.
Cook on low for a coupla hours. The longer the better. Also you can turn it off for a while if it is too hot. NO BOILING. Bubbling is slightly undesirable.
Make some cornbread at the last minute and serve it hot.
Sour cream, Greek yogurt, grated cheese, guacamole are all also delish.
Don’t put tabasco or Sriracha or anything real hot in it because it will get hotter as it cooks. Just let people put it on theirs.
xoxox

my room mate elle insisted on fritos rather than corn bread and that was fantastic, like frito pie!
also the cinnamon takes it over the top. so so goood
so in our house, when we want heat, we turn to banjamin’s ghost pepper elixir!
the ghost pepper is the hottest pepper in the world! but ben’s sauce and dry rub are spicy and flavorful, not just “tasteless heat“. i need to figure out some kind of portable shaker to keep in my purse because i am seriously addicted.

not so much to be loved as to love…

Jill Kossoris “does Blondie” better than anyone else…
apprantly Jill lives in Nashville now….hm

also, jill is totally hair inspiration for those of us fine and pin straight-haired….some of the members of the Shivvers were also in a band called In a Hot Coma, i cant find anything about them on the internet except for this snippet of a song on allmusic…i wanna stay up all night…click the lil speaker once you get there…
……………………………………………………………………………………….

man, so ben and elle have been off vacay-ing in mexico for a week now, they come back tomorrow and meanwhile! so much has happened to Rufus and I while holding down the fort (rufus is the d-o-g)…

went out to girls night! had tapas and got SICK FOOD POISONING SICK…but not immediately, first we went to see Natural Child

then i was sick forever, found a mouse in the house, made 60 bucks, spent it at the thrift store, and then i broke my glasses! end of an under-documented era…this is the only (unflattering) picture i think of me in said glasses…incidentally, this was also taken the day after my bday and double incidentally im in love with summer and i cannot wait for us to see each other again…

anyway, after a mild pout and identity crisis, i found these Bettys on etsy and said “ooooooooh!!” so i knew i needed them. im excited to begin new identity: horn-rimmed prom date/nerd-corp nurse type in regulation pink aluminum…

………………………………………………………………………………………………………

and THEN i went to see Jonathan Richman at the 5spot. ugh, i DIE. what a SWOON FEST, me and my girlfriends could hardly keep upright the whole time, so weak in the knees for him!
i had seen him before about two years ago, same place, and i had forgotten what an intense performer he is! he gets this puppy dog stare while he plays, hes so sincere, id vote for him. there it is…

and he just has complete mastery of his instrument and his voice and you can tell he’s been on stage forever and adores it. and hes so funny and deep and talented and WE GOT OUR PICTURE WITH HIM and im such a blushing fan-girl, all i could do was giggle and gasp at him. siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh

via jojo blog…heres his song “older girl”…..
she smiled, and that got me thinking about her….

not so much to be loved as to love…st francis of assisi via jonathan richman.
the show last night, there were maybe 100 people there. very intimate, and everyone was completely silent…
lovely lovely lovely
one more…

every day is a ho-liday…

i am worrying about memory. i kind of always have actually…sometimes, i wonder if its because im an only child. i imagine that if i were to have a sibling, they would help me keep all these pieces of childhood together. but maybe thats wrong.
ive been trying to keep myself accountable. i tried logging how many hours i spent on the internet, but then i was just wasting extra time, writing down how much time i was wasting.
i’m not trying to document and categorize my trash and refuse, but i’m interested to see what i actually do with my self, with my time and my life…
so heres a memory experiment, a TMI experiment…
today…
i woke up because my mom called me. she’s going to send me some more sweaters from home because when i packed to move to nashville, i was under the impression that winter was over. it was snowing outside this morning, i moved my car while still in my pajamas cause last time it snowed, i had to call the triple a guys to come pull my car out of the drive way.

i did sun salutations, had breakfast and looked for jobs on the internet, nothing interesting or worthwhile. hung out till lunch with the Cosby show. Elle likes watching day time television, the Cosby show and the Tyra Banks talk show in particular. i cut my bangs.
i felt restless, and upset about the snow and the cold and the lame job postings. i decided to go to the grocery store in order to buy the ingredients needed to make carrot ginger breakfast loaf, good with cream cheese.

i called jamie while i was there (because i saw some sexy pictures on her tumblr) and heard all about her residency at the Lobot gallery in Oakland california, how she moved back to Richmond for a week, how people acted like she had never left and yet were not sad to see her move on again to Brooklyn. she had recently gone to her great aunt’s 100th birthday party…it was uncomfortable and awkward and the aunt didnt seem cognisant.

i made the carrot bread, i added extra pulped ginger. elle made ben a heart shaped pizza for an after valentines date and i made myself scarce for a while, hanging out in my room watching the new project runway. the judges keep liking things that i hate and ignoring things that id actually like to wear. it makes me wonder about my taste level.
timothy called, i made him promise to send me a late vday present. i want to start pen pal correspondances because its always nice to get things in the mail…i also want to paint my room, so that i can put nails in the wall and hang up things i want to look at. i like zephyr

ben went to the bar, elle and i had whiskey and carrot bread, watched models on the runway and did our nails cause we are ladies. we did not go to the paper hats show at bettys, nor to the dance party at the five spot…another time.

now i am upstairs, watching art 21 season 3 “memory” with hiroshi sugimoto etc and i am remembering how…..
in college, we were taken on a field trip to dc where we visited a sugimoto exhibit, “seascapes”.
these dozen or so photographs were heavily lit on a wall in an other wise blacked out room, my best friend alex and i decided that this was the way to go…in a dark room of sugimoto’s, music blasting and poisonous gas seeping in… dance party till you drop.

starting to reread Dorian Gray…might start over a second time rereading it in order to put little asterisks* by the good parts and critical comments in the margins…cause this time its MINE, not a library book.
love him.
apparantly they made a Dorian Gray movie….?

i dunno, it looks epic and sexy and romantic and all, but it doesnt seem like they stuck to Wilde‘s original dialogue. we’ll see, im not all that excited about it.
WHATEVS prince caspian, you are a FAR cry from the dorian of my dreams.
if anything you look more like oscar wilde honestly…

victims on parade/or/innocence is sexier than you think

post_1492147_1236766789_med
so i dont know when it started exactly, or even why im so enamored, but i am kind of obsessed with child beauty pageant culture.
not in that, i wish i had been part of it, or in that my children WILL be part of it, and not in that im completely reviled and disgusted…
all the facets of debate just fascinate me; the awful parents and spoiled children, the supportive parents and good family units, the OUTFITS, the posing, the grooming, the sexuality, the bribery, the mental damage and abuse, the psychosis of all involved.

and then yeah, these girls end up looking like dolls, like mark ryden paintings and perfect lolita nymphs. they look beautiful and perfect, and plastic, discordant and terrifying all at once.
im just blown away. im left with no opinions on the matter just sick curiosity.
……………….

this interest culminated two years ago at halloween. i went as jonbenet ramsey, complete with strangulation marks and nightie (she was found in a barbie nightie)….tasteless yes i know. the next day i went to the hospital with a scratched cornea from wearing false lashes, so karma dealt swift retribution.
mejon

……………….
but everyone else seems to approach this subject with the same sort of morbid interest. many artists view these girls as victims of lost innocence and document them as such…
Picture 2

Vance Jacobs

of course jonbenet is the ultimate beauty queen victim, paraded on stage dressed as a sex object and then molested and murdered at the age of six. she died as she lived and no wonder her parents were under so much speculation…this brings me to Miss Landmine, a project based in Angola and Cambodia. with the tagline, “Everyone has the right to be beautiful“, the project includes among its goals:

* Female pride and empowerment.
* Disabled pride and empowerment.
* Global and local landmine awareness and information.
* Question established concepts of physical perfection.
* Replace the passive term ‘Victim’ with the active term ‘Survivor

1120071045_m_112007_misslandmine

obviously Miss Landmine has a serious political agenda and intends to destroy typical stereotypes of beauty. but its such an interesting twist on the idea of pageant victims. if one overlooks the organization’s intention, or maybe stumbled upon a photo out of context, one may assume it was in fact commentary or a spoof  on the pageant debate.

Honey in the Sunshine
2005

Gretchen Ryan
is a painter whose subjects are mainly beauty queens. most of the girls strike a coquettish pose, or are painted into fairy tale backgrounds, the above painting appears to be Ryan’s most outspoken piece. Honey takes a pose reminiscent of Marylin Monroe and at first one doesn’t notice her missing teeth. were they violently knocked out or did she lose them naturally? both ideas make honey out to be a victim: of violence or projected sexuality.

hot pink, down on main street

so im in norfolk, visiting my dad and highschool friends, and subsequently people i thought i’d never see again…
and my dad and i had a crab boil the first night i was here. thats just what it sounds like, you buy a bushel of live crabs in a paper sack, put them in the fridge so they achieve suspended animation, take em out when youre ready, put em in the sink and wake em up SO THEY KNOW THEYRE GONNA DIE, and then you throw them in boiling water.
and smash them open and pick them apart and eat them with butter.
anyway we had a bushel of crabs and then that night i dreamt we had a bushel of kittens.
hot pink ones.
……………………….
and since ive moved to richmond, ive heard this song on the radio at least a dozen times after certainly never hearing it before.

i thought it was bruce springsteen, i thought i was finally about to have a boss song that i liked. but no, its bob seger. mostly im seriously into that stadium concert guitar effect.
anyway, i woke up with it in my head today.
